Photography of the Benton Park neighborhood in St. Louis, MO.

Benton Park is a neighborhood in eastern St. Louis City, just west of the Soulard neighborhood. The area was originally used as the City Cemetery, but those buried in the cemetery were relocated in 1865. The neighborhood was created by ordinance in 1866 and later named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the first U.S. Senator representing Missouri. As the neighborhood grew, it attracted several breweries due to its location above a system of caves that were ideal for beer storage. The most noteworthy of these was the Lemp Brewery, which still stands today, although defunct. With the breweries came a large influx of German immigrants, whose masonry skills are evident in the architecture of the neighborhood. Today, the neighborhood is know for its Cherokee Street Antique Row, its historic Lemp District, restaurants and merchants. The official boundaries of the area are Gravois Avenue on the north, Cherokee Street on the south, I-55 on the east, and Jefferson Avenue on the west.
