Peru is located in the western portion of South America, with the Lake Titicaca basin located in the southeast. Visitors to Peru find the Amazon rainforest, the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, and an abundance of Inca ruins and archaeological sites. The most well-known of these sites is the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu located high in the Andes mountains. The most well known populated cities are Cusco, a colonial city at 11,000+ feet in altitude, and the capital city of Lima, an arid city at sea level, on the Pacific coast.
