Photography of the Compton Hill Water Tower in St. Louis, MO.
This French Romanesque-style Water Tower was built toward the end of the 19th century, as the growing city’s demand for water was outgrowing its existing water delivery system. The Water Tower was built of rusticated limestone, buff brick and terra cotta on its face. On the base are a griffin and vine-like scrolls. Inside, 198 iron steps spiral around a standpipe, ending in an observation deck where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the City. Functionally, the Water Tower was retired in 1929, but by that time, thousands of people were visiting the Water Tower to climb the stairs and enjoy the beautifully landscaped park in which it was enclosed. Today, the Water Tower remains a part of the city's architectural heritage.
